Ancient Cosmic Makeover

Ancient Cosmic Makeover

Introduction

We often look into the night sky and see that we are sheltered by thousands of dots of light. These dots of light are what we call stars. Stars, as we all know, are luminous giant hot balls of burning gases in free space and radiate heat and light energy in huge amounts. Our sun is also a star and because of it, the Earth is capable of sustaining life. The stars make up most of the visible universe. Have you ever thought of the reason behind the existence of stars and cosmos or whether they were created by someone? The following blog will provide you with some fascinating information on the same topic.

About

In the early stages when the universe was nothing but scattered plasma particles, made up of electrons, protons, nuclei, light, etc., it was expanding strenuously and yet to cool down. Furthermore, Atoms hadn’t come into existence, it was in an ionized state.

After years of expanding and cooling down, electrons and protons combined to form atoms and more than 90% of the yield consisted of Hydrogen atoms. It took another thousand years for the birth of the first stars and galaxies from hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen atoms eagerly absorb and quickly re-emit far-UV light or Lyman alpha(Ly−α) emission line (λ ≅ 121.6 nm). Some of the light produced by the first stars matched this wavelength. Because the Ly−α emission line easily interacted with hydrogen atoms, it couldn’t travel far before the gas scattered it in random directions. This led to ionization of the surrounding hydrogen gas from intense Ly-α emission lines from various galaxies across the universe forming bubbles. Eventually, bubbles like these grew around all galaxies and filled intergalactic space, as a result, re-ionizing the universe.

This is one way to study the existence of the Universe but taking into account the farthest galaxy group EGS77 (Extended Groth Strip) identified recently, consists of three galaxies. EGS77 is a quintessential example that has shown the same phenomenon of Ancient Cosmic Makeover popularly known as reionization.

My Point of View

I believe this theory is one way to know the existence of Cosmos as we see it now. I can relate this theory to the concept- ‘Coagulation of Particles in a solution, which was taught to us in Chemistry classes. The way ionizing matter combines and form bubbles in space is also a very practical approach to studying the makeover act. Moreover, this theory supports the Big Bang theory and we get a clear and big picture about our Universe. However, while studying coagulation we studied the formation of precipitate with respect to the medium. But knowing the existence of Dark Matter and Dark Energy in our Universe, can we really conclude re-ionization to be the actual reason behind the formation of Cosmos, as we still lack information about them?

Conclusion

‘Imagination often carries us to worlds that never were. But without it, we go nowhere.’ - Carl Sagan (renowned American Astronomer)

Like what Carl Sagan said, This is one theory to study the birth and the reasons behind the existence of stars and the visible universe. Using our creativity and Imagination, we think and work upon our theory, then search for clues either theoretically or practically, then only we would be able to uncover various other unsolved mysteries.
